Your campus network should connect every building — without connecting you to endless lease costs.

Campus-wide dark fibre that gives your university or college unlimited bandwidth, complete ownership, and a 25-year infrastructure asset — installed around your academic calendar.

Multi-building campuses.
Single-point-of-failure networks.

Universities and colleges face a unique connectivity problem. Dozens of buildings spread across a campus, each needing high-bandwidth access — but most are stitched together with ageing copper, leased lines, and contracts that were signed a decade ago.

Multi-building sprawl — faculties, labs, residences and admin blocks all demanding bandwidth from a network not built for it
Term-time constraints — any disruption during teaching weeks is unacceptable, making upgrades difficult to schedule
Exponential demand — students streaming, research data transfers, IoT sensors and hybrid teaching all competing for the same pipe
Legacy limitations — legacy copper and managed leased lines that can't scale without expensive new contracts

Infrastructure you own.
Bandwidth you control.

SICOM designs and installs campus fibre networks tailored to the way universities actually work — not a generic product bolted on to an existing telecoms contract.

Dark fibre links between campus buildings — fibre you own outright, connecting every faculty, lab and residence
Structured cabling — Cat6A and fibre distribution within buildings, designed to support current and future loads
Managed WiFi networks — high-density campus WiFi built for lecture theatres, libraries and outdoor spaces
Private 5G networks — dedicated cellular coverage for research applications and campus-wide mobility
IoT for building management — sensor networks for energy monitoring, access control, HVAC and space utilisation

Network Design & Options

Our engineers produce a detailed campus network design with multiple cost options — from connecting core buildings first to a full campus-wide backbone. You choose the scope and the budget.

Holiday Installation

We schedule installation during holidays and non-teaching periods to minimise disruption. Our in-house team handles all civils, duct work, fibre blowing, splicing and commissioning.

Ongoing Support

Monitoring, preventative maintenance and emergency response. Your campus network is protected and performing at its best, term after term, year after year.

What dark fibre means
for your campus.

Take Control

Stop relying on carrier-managed services that limit what you can do. Own the physical infrastructure and decide how bandwidth is allocated across your campus.

Minimise Costs

Replace recurring lease payments with a single capital investment. Dark fibre typically delivers 30-50% lower total cost of ownership over 10 years compared to managed services.

Flex Bandwidth

Upgrade capacity by changing the equipment at each end, not by renegotiating contracts. Scale from 1Gbps to 100Gbps without touching the cable in the ground.

Own Your Network

A dark fibre network is a physical asset on your balance sheet with a 25+ year lifespan. No vendor lock-in, no surprise price rises, no contract renegotiation every 3 years.

"We had six buildings on separate leased lines, each with different contracts and renewal dates. SICOM connected the entire campus on a single dark fibre backbone — installed over the summer break. Our IT team now has full control over bandwidth allocation, and we've eliminated over £40,000 a year in recurring lease costs."

Education-specific
answers.

Yes — and that's our strong recommendation. We plan campus installations around the academic calendar, scheduling disruptive civil works and building entry during summer, Easter or Christmas breaks. For internal cabling that doesn't affect teaching spaces, we can work during term time in evenings and weekends. Every project includes a detailed phasing plan so your estates team knows exactly when each area is affected.
That's the beauty of dark fibre — you don't have to commit to a fixed bandwidth. The fibre itself has virtually unlimited capacity. You choose the bandwidth by selecting the optical equipment (transceivers and switches) at each end. Most campus backbones start at 10Gbps and can be upgraded to 100Gbps or beyond by simply swapping equipment, without touching the cable. We size the fibre count to give you ample room for growth, so you'll never need to re-cable.
There's no practical upper limit. We've designed campus networks connecting anywhere from 4 to 30+ buildings. The network topology — whether it's a ring, star or mesh — is designed based on your campus layout, resilience requirements and budget. We can also phase the rollout, connecting priority buildings first and adding others over time as budgets allow. The backbone infrastructure is designed from the outset to accommodate future expansion.
Yes. Many university campuses have a mix of owned land, leased land, and public rights of way between buildings. We handle all wayleave negotiations as part of the project, including liaising with landlords, local authorities and utility companies. For split-site campuses — where buildings are separated by public roads or third-party land — we identify the most efficient route and secure the necessary permissions. This is often the most time-consuming part of a campus project, and having our experienced team manage it keeps timelines on track.
